Twenty plus years

Tallahassee, Florida, USA

July 1st week

It has been more than two decades have gone by since we moved from Bean town to the Old town. The stay at the Old town has been remarkable. There have been additions to the family and loses to the family.

The other interesting point is that the stay at the Old town making it longest living town in my history.

It has been now two decades in the old town and I can’t even imagine how fast the time has gone by. The whole family added so many members and we lost couple of people during the last two decades and some years.

As they say the constant thing is “the change”.

FSU Day at the Capitol

Tuesday, April 01, 2014

Florida State Capitol, Tallahassee, FL, USA

I went to the Florida State Capitol early morning and set-up a table for the Institute of Molecular Biophysics. The tables were located in the first floor lobby of the Capitol. Our Institute was represented by two talented graduate students who spoke to many visitors.

Our table was set-up around 8:30 AM in the morning. Our interim President stopped by our table in the morning. Around 11:30 AM some food was served in front of the Capitol. We took turns to go around other tables to see what other departments have displayed.

Finally around 1:45 PM we wrapped up displays and went back to work at the University. Overall, it was a good experience.

Honor Society Induction

Induction into Honor Society

Sunday, March 30, 2014

University Center B

Today we were invited to attend the induction of VS into one of the prestigious freshmen Honor Societies (PES) at Florida State University. VS has been invited into join couple of other Honor Societies but collectively we decided that it is better to join one Honor Society and contribute some significant work rather than join many. The theme is that joining many societies will not only thin out the contribution, extend your time commitment over and beyond possible during a busy academic year but also make one choose between two equally good causes.

When we went inside all the candidates were a certificate of induction. The guest speaker spoke about the importance service and quoted from his experience. Then the members were inducted into the society. They received their honor stoles.

How to add FireWire (400) Port to Windows 7 Home

Sunday, March 09, 2014

I have a Windows 7 Home computer and has been with me for at least two years. I usually use it for my home-video collection repository and so would like to add all my home-videos to it. Recently as one of my older computer stopped working and my older collection home-videos were in Sony i-Link formatted camcorders (Sony i-Link is also called, FireWire 400, IEEE 1394) I was worried about adding old camcorder 8mm-analog and 8mm-digital (D8) tape collection to a new computer. The FireWire connections have 4-pin connector on the camcorder and 6-pin connector on the computer side.

Unfortunately, the new Home computer didn’t come with a FireWire port. So I went ahead and ordered FireWire 400 (aka IEEE 1394) PCI Cards from a company. Before I ordered I need to find out what my Home computer’s mother board (aka System Board)  would support. So I opened the back of my computer and found my system board has one empty PCI card slot and two empty PCI Express Card slots. This means I can get PCI Express IEEE1394 card for my computer.

So I found in Raukten Shopping (formerly  Protronix 2-Port Firewire 1394a PCI Express Controller Cards for sale and ordered them (~$14/piece). Once they arrived I opened the computer and removed the back panel and inserted the PCI Express IEEE1394a (aka Firewire 400 card) closed the back panel.

After closing the backpanel the computer is ready to accept FireWire connections.
